SENEGALESE WOMEN OF POWER

Coumba Gawlo Seck was born on January 29, 1972 in Tivaouane in the Thies region of Senegal. She comes from a family called Gawlo (Morello). It is from her mother that Coumba inherits a special voice.

At the age of 14 she won the "Golden Voice of Senegal" contest with a song written by her father in homage to Nelson Mandela.

It was at the age of 20 that it was discovered and produced by Senegalese producer Ibrahima Sylla.

It has no less than 10 awards.

In addition to being a talented and successful singer, Coumba is a committed singer. Indeed, throughout her career she has worked for the most disadvantaged. She joined Les Enfoirées in 1999, she is also the director of the Lumière pour l'Enfance Foundation where she fights for sick children and the status of women.

This commitment to the cause of children and women led to her appointment as a "Goodwill Ambassador" for the United Nations Development Programme UNDP.

On her initiative, she organized concerts and events to work for peace.

With UNDP in Côte d'Ivoire, she travelled to the city of Bouaké, where there have been clashes between rebels and government forces, to play her music and try to raise awareness among the inhabitants in order to establish definitive peace between the North and the South.

She also organized a concert in support of Haiti called Africa for Haiti on March 6, 2010.

Coumba Gawlo Seck didn't just ride the wave of success, she used her fame and talent to do good. She has worked her entire career to help the needy, a true modern-day heroine!

"The Melanin Goddess"

Khoudia Diop is a 23 year old Senegalese model, she has nicknamed herself "melanin goddess" (the goddess of melanin) due to her very dark skin tone.

Khoudia was very mocked during her childhood "because of" her ebony skin tone. She suffered enormously from it but reassured and encouraged by her sister, she took the opposite tack at the age of 17 while living in Paris, she became a model.

Since then, the contracts have followed one another, but they are not the same. Recently she even signed as the muse of Fenty Beauty, the make-up brand of the famous singer Rihanna.

She often said that she couldn't find the right foundation for her skin tone, she found the cosmetics industry not representative enough of the range of possible skin tones:

"Sometimes on the set of a photo shoot, the makeup people don't have the right shade for me. And it makes me feel like the industry doesn't represent me. I don't think that's fair, because everybody wants to feel represented."

But today it's different, more and more brands have understood that there is a multitude of skin tones and that you can't be satisfied with just a few shades. Thanks to people like Khoudia Diop, the world is changing and mentalities are evolving for the better.

"Sometimes on the set of a photo shoot, the makeup artists don't have the right shade for me. And it makes me feel like the industry doesn't represent me. I don't think that's fair, because everyone wants to feel represented. »
